Velatura: Creating Trees and Places with Subtle Layers of Purples, Greens, and Blues

East-Syracuse based fine artist, Maria Rizzo, will exhibit thirty acrylic and oil paintings and sketches in a one-person show from April 4 to May 31, 2017, at SUNY Empire State College, 6333 Rte. 298, 3rd Floor, East Syracuse, NY, (315-472-5730). An opening reception honoring the artist will be held April 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

These paintings show trees and nature scenes created as a response to those places which deeply resonate with the artist. Although several paintings are copies from life; Rizzo adores creating art based from the real world but vividly transformed by her infatuation for soothing colors like purples, greens, and blues. Rizzo truly enjoys creating paintings that reflect her admiration for nature's creative force. With each brushstroke, Rizzo feels a connection with its whimsical energy. The term velatura reflects the artist’s painting process, which consists of the fabrication, subtle layers upon layers of color, of dreamlike, and sometimes playful, realities.

Maria Rizzo’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the northeast of the United States and abroad. Rizzo is also the recipient of several awards and honors, in addition to the 2016 first Award in the SUNY Empire State College 8th Annual Student Art Competition, she is the recipient of the 2014 Individual Artist Commission Grant from CNY Arts Decentralization Program, and the 2013 Curator-in-Residence at The Tech Garden in Syracuse, NY. Maria Rizzo was born in Bologna, Italy in 1987.
